GE13:Newcomers and ex-MP in fight for Ampang

TWO newcomers and a former MP from Barisan Nasional will take on the Pakatan stronghold in the Ampang constituency in GE13.

Lawyer Mohamad Nadzim Ibrahim will take on incumbent state assemblyman Mohamad Azmin Ali (PKR) in Bukit Antarabangsa while businessman Datuk Baderisham Jolly will contest in Lembah Jaya.

It is speculated that incumbent Lembah Jaya state assemblyman Khasim Abdul Aziz from PAS will defend his seat in GE13.

Dentist Dr Rozaidah Talib, who was Ampang MP Ampang from 2004 to 2008, will run against incumbent Zuraida Kamaruddin from PKR.

The names of the Selangor Barisan candidates were announced yesterday by Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Shah Alam.

Dr Rozaidah, who is Ampang Wanita Umno chief and a mother of five, said she was ready to make a comeback and face a straight challenge with the Opposition.

“This time it will be different. I am confident we can win with the support of Barisan,” she said.

In 2004, Dr Rozaidah, 49, won the Ampang parliamentary seat from PKR’s Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar, with a majority of 19,732 votes.

She entered the political fray in 1987 and has held the post of division chief since 2004.

Mohamad Nadzim, 42, who was also one of the defence counsels in the Canny Ong murder case in 2004, said among the issues he would prioritise in Bukit Antarabangsa were security, public transportation and building a school in the township.

“Security needs to be beefed up and we need a police beat base in the area.

“I don’t see many buses plying the township so I would like to change that.

“Also, there are places where we can allocate space to build schools as most parents have to send their children to Taman Melawati and Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

The Malacca-born father of five, who has been living in Ampang Jaya for 38 years, said he has been actively involved in politics since 1998.

He is also Ampang Umno division committee member and Ampang Jaya Umno branch chief.

He said he was ready to take on the role as “underdog” against Azmin.

Meanwhile, Baderisham, 45, who was born and bred in Lembah Jaya, and is the Lembah Jaya Selatan Umno Branch chief said there was a lot that needed to be done in his constituency.

“It is not just about organising ceramahs, Lembah Jaya has great potential to be developed,” he said.
